Chiropractors For Kids

Yes, you can take your child to a chiropractor. My name is Anna, and I work for a chiropractic medical office. Some people believe that children are not good candidates for chiropractic services because they are still growing. This is simply not true. Kids' bodies experience the same kinds of stress and pressure as adults' bodies do, and they can also benefit from the attention a chiropractor can give. This is especially true for children who participate in sports and other physically demanding activities. This blog will help you understand what a chiropractor can do for your child and why you should make an appointment to see one.

Back Pain: Types, Causes, and How Chiropractic Care Can Help

Neil Fuller

Chronic or persistent back pain is a common problem in the United States, affecting about 16 million Americans.  Mainly, back pain is either the result of a muscle strain, sprain, or inflammation. Everyday activities, such as bending and twisting, often cause these injuries. Back pain associated with muscle strain responds well to rest and anti-inflammatory medications. However, if the pain persists for longer than a few days, anti-inflammatory medications lose their effectiveness, and surgery or chiropractic care may be necessary.

Types of Back Pain?

Back pain can either be chronic or acute. The main symptom of acute back pain is moderate to severe lower back pain, with or without leg pain. Other symptoms include severe pain, tenderness, spasms, limited range of motion, and swelling. On the other hand, symptoms of chronic back pain include dull or sharp pain that persists even after rest, tingling, numbness, and muscle weakness.

Some common types of back pain include:

Radiculopathy

Sometimes, back pain may take the form of radiculopathy. This condition causes intense and chronic pain to the spine and back due to compression or irritation of a nerve root. Radiculopathy usually occurs as a result of an injury or inflammation to a spinal nerve root.

Symptoms include sharp shooting pain of the affected nerve radiating down the extremity. The nerve root injury or damage is typically the result of a herniated disc.  It may also be linked to spinal stenosis, osteoarthritis, tumors, fractures, infections, and other reasons.

Myelopathy

Myelopathy is also a leading cause of back pain. Myelopathy is a disease of the spinal cord. It occurs when there is damage to the spinal cord's gray matter, which contains nerve cell bodies and some types of their long, threadlike projections called axons.

Symptoms include pain, numbness or tingling, muscle weakness in the back and legs that worsens with standing or walking. The main cause of this condition is Injury to the spinal cord, especially due to trauma (car accident, gunshot, fall). However, the disease can also be caused by tumors, disc herniations, etc.

How Chiropractic Care Can Help with Back Pain

Chiropractic care is a non-invasive therapy that is effective for low back pain. Chiropractic is a type of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) based on the theory that spinal joint misalignments can affect general health. Chiropractic care works by manipulating the joints of your spine and neck to remove any pressure on the nerves in these areas, which helps decrease back pain.

The Bottom Line

Back pain is something that millions of people suffer from worldwide, and it can vary depending on what part of the back is affected. If you have unsuccessfully tried other remedies for back pain, you can try seeing a chiropractor like Eric Schmetterling DC.
